Kandinsky Lesson Plan In Four Parts: Part Two, Art Criticism

Part Two

Art Criticism Lesson: Kandinsky

How do we criticize a work of art?

  • When one thinks of the word criticism, many might view it as a negative. In terms of art criticism, it is simply using the Feldman's method to define and discuss works of art.
  • The Feldman Method can be used for any works of art, and often results in a further understanding of the piece and how it relates to an individual's life.
  • Below is a link to video that shortly explains the Method:

   What is the Feldman Method?

The Method is split into four different parts:

  1. Describe
  • Begin by simply stating the title of the work, artist, year of creation, medium, and measurements.
  • Discuss what is seen in the works for example, such as the subject and attributes seen.
      2. Analysis
  • To analyze a work of art, we need to review the elements of art, and the principles of design
  1. Use the elements of art to discuss different features in a work. The elements are: space, form, color, shape, line, texture.

       2. Use the principles of design to more features of the artwork. The principles are: pattern,             eeeeecontrast, emphasis, balance, proportion/scale, harmony, rhythm/movement.

  • Go through each element and principle, and make connection between the elements and principles to the artwork.
